Hybrid Electric Ship Propulsion

For marine platforms utilizing hybrid electric drive our innovative systems using power-dense permanent magnet (PM) technology can significantly reduce fuel consumption.

Aimed at bringing the fuel efficiency of hybrid technology to a number of the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke class destroyers, DRS has teamed with General Atomics to develop a DDG 51 Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) system.

Using a compact PM motor/generator integrated with the main reduction gear, our DDG 51 HED system provides propulsion power at lower speeds, reducing gas turbine operating hours and optimizing turbine loading for more efficient use. This configuration results in conserving many thousands of barrels of fuel per year per ship while increasing mission effectiveness and flexibility with longer on station times.

Hybrid elect drive with DRS PM technology offers:

Space & Weight Benefits –High torque in a compact package means minimal engine room impact

Fuel Savings – Using PM power at low speeds can save thousands of barrels of fuel

Life Cycle Costs – Reduced gas turbine operation time saves on maintenance costs

DRS PM machines provide reliable, highly-efficient marine solutions for ship back-fit and new construction.
